Al Smith the Sportscaster for WFLO said on his broadcasts “A Quitter Never Wins and A Winner Never Quits” Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to formally announce to the citizens of Farmville and the community the opening of my campaign for Mayor of Farmville.
At the age of 71, I have spent 99 percent of my life in Farmville. I am committed to the development of Farmville both business and the citizens. I will work hard day and night to unify Farmville. I need your help to make this happen. I am presently President & CEO of the Oliver & Eggleston Funeral Establishment in Farmville and Executive Director of the Oliver Chapel in Crewe. I served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the historic First Baptist of Farmville from 1980 to 2005, which I joined over 65 years ago. I also served a Member, Vice-Chair and Chair of many political, civic, and community organizations.
I am a 1969 graduate of Robert Russa Morton High School of Farmville. When the school closed in 1959 I was promoted to the third grade. For two years I did not go to school at all. The second two years my parents rented a house in Cumberland so my siblings and I could return to school. The schools in Prince Edward County reopen in 1963. My siblings returned to Prince Edward. In 1977 I received a Associates Degree in Applied Science focusing on Mortuary Science. In 2007 I receive a B S Degree in Business Administration from Saint Paul’s College with 4.0 grade point average as one of the Virginia’s “Brown Scholars”.
I was privileged to serve as a member of Farmville Town Council from 1984 to 1988. I held Town Hall Meetings so that citizens could speak to me “one on one” about their concerns. As a member of Council I attended many meetings of the Prince Edward Board of Supervisors to make sure that the needs and concerns of our County were met. One of my priorities when I am elected Mayor on November 8th will be to convene a meeting of the Farmville Town Council and Boards of Supervisors of Prince Edward and Cumberland counties. I believe such meetings are important for the growth and development of this community.
As a former member of Council and a Farmville businessman for more that 30 years, I am familiar with the economic needs of Farmville. When I am elected Mayor, I will pro-actively work to inform prospective business and industry about the assets of the Farmville area, including an available labor force, good water and sewer systems, a low crime rate, a strong public and private education from kindergarten through university and college level, and increasing strong health care, including a good local hospital.
A related concern is the continued revitalization of the downtown business corridor. As Mayor, I will support the effort in Historic Farmville and the Downtown Merchants Association, to make downtown Farmville an attractive and competitive location for business. Another concern is to identify and work toward a better recreational opportunity for our citizens, especially the youth of our town.
The key focus of my campaign and my administration as Mayor, will be as follows:
- Fiscal Responsibility
- Strengthening the Farmville Police Department
- Improving the relationship between the Town and Counties
- Revitalization of Downtown Farmville
- Improving the relationship between Longwood University and the Town
- Accountability to the Citizens and Businesses of Farmville
I fully understand the position and relationship of Mayor and the Town Manager of Farmville. I will work with the Town Council, Town Manager, citizens, businesses, Democrats, Republicans, or anyone else to accomplish the goals that I have set for the continued growth and development of Farmville.
When I am elected Mayor of Farmville on November 8th, I will seek every opportunity to make our community one in which the citizens can point with justifiable pride to the qualities of the services which the Town Council oversees. Above all, I pledge to conduct business in a open fashion, to assure that all of the citizens are aware of what is being done on their behalf and with their tax dollars. As this campaign unfolds, I will elaborate in more detail my vision for a unified Farmville.
Let’s Make History Together.
